Anotācija: Hsiao Ssu’s father is a civil servant from the Mainland. The family lives simply but being connected to the bureaucracy, the parents must make sure they do not hurt the feelings of certain vested interests. Hsiao Ssu possesses an innate sense of social justice. His best friend, Hsiao Mao wang, is fond of rock and roll music. In the listless and lethargic '60s, Western culture is making inroads in Taiwan's conservative milieu. Hsiao Ssu and his friends are beginning to take note of the opposite sex. They hang out in a tuck-shop type meeting place where concerts and jigs are held. Hsiao Ssu soon becomes fond of pretty Hsiao Ming.

In the run-up to a school concert where two rival school gangs find themselves at cross-purposes regarding how to share its organization and proceeds, 'Hsiao Ssu and Hsiao Ming's ex-boyfriend "Honey" is a gang leader who is now a wanted criminal. On the night of the concert, Honey is killed by " Shandong", the head of the rival gang.

Because her family is poor, Hsiao Ming relies on building up subtle, complex relationships with different men, using her innocent looks to inspire emotions. After Honey's death, she becomes more intimate with Hsiao Ssu meeting at rendezvous sites and taking walks like lovers. Meanwhile, Hsiao Ssu's father is picked up by the government for questioning, in a "White Terror" style purge. The father is released but verges on a nervous breakdown. His attitude changes from one of a highly principled man to someone who is helpless and ready to compromise. When Hsiao Ssu is dismissed from school due to a misunderstanding, the father feels that there is nothing he can do.

Because of all these setbacks, Hsiao Ssu cannot reconcile his frustrations with reality. He suffers one more emotional setback when he discovers that Hsiao Ming has become closer to another boy. In a fit of jealousy, Hsiao Ssu grasps hold of a knife. He confronts Hsiao Ming in the treet; his mind filled conflicting emotions, he knifes Hsiao Ming and kills her. As a result, Hsiao Ssu is sentenced to prison. When Hsiao Mao wang tries to visit him, he is rebuffed by the guards but he leaves behind a tape in which he talks about how he wrote a fan letter to Elvis Presley and received a reply. The guards throw the tape into the waste basket-one last indication of young people may never receive the understanding they deserve from conservative society.
