Director Sai Yoichi adapts the semi-autobiographical novel by Korean-Japanese author Yang Sok Gil into a brutally insightful look at Japanese society. Blood and Bones marks the first time Kitano Takeshi has appeared in a leading role under another director's watch in over ten years. Sai reportedly waited six years for Kitano to accept the lead role as Kim Shunpei, and refused to shoot the film with any other actor besides Kitano. His perseverance paid of, as Kitano turns in what may be his most compelling performance ever, creating a truly frightening, hateful, and yet disturbingly charismatic character. Blood and Bones has been honored with numerous awards, including Grand Prize, Best Actor, Best Actress, and Best Supporting Actor at the 59th Mainichi Film Competition. Prestigious film magazine Kinema Junpo rated Blood and Bones as one of the Top 10 films of the year, and recognized Kitano as the year's Best Actor. And finally, the film has been nominated for Best Director, Actor, and Supporting Actress at the 47th Blue Ribbon Awards. Blood and Bones is a powerful showcase for Kitano Takeshi, and a must-see Japanese film.
